Michael T. Carey is the law firm's Chief Investigator. Mr. Carey is known and recognized in the community as the former spokesman for the Virginia Beach Police Department, where he served in that capacity until he retired from the department in 2004. Prior to being selected by the chief of police as the department's spokesman, Carey had previously been one of four fatal crash team investigators for the department. He was also a member of the department's hostage negotiation team. In 1997, he was inducted into the City of Virginia Beach Employee Hall of Fame for his work ethic and many accomplishments within the police department. In 1996 the Top Cop Committee of the Rock Church named Carey the "Top Cop", an annual award given to recognize outstanding service in the line of duty. Mr. Carey is also a past president of the National Information Officers' Association, and serves on the past-presidents' council.
Mr. Carey holds a B.A. in Criminology from St. Leo University, St. Leo, FL. His police department background makes him well qualified to carry out complex investigations in a caring and professional manner. At Shuttleworth, Ruloff, Swain, Haddad & Morecock, P.C., Mr. Carey conducts the law firm's investigations in both civil and criminal matters.
